World Premiere Screening

Nope- this isn’t about movies! It’s about screening your children. When we remove our children from public and private school, we shoulder not only the responsibility for their education and socialization- but also the responsibility for screening our children for everything from vision and hearing problems to learning disabilities and speech and language delays.

I can’t even begin to tell you how many people have come up to me over the past 15 years as a homeschool speaker and said something like, “My son is 9 and can’t read at all. Do you have any ideas to help me?” My first question is always the same, “Have you had your son’s vision tested?” Invariably the answer is no. And I’ve had dozens of embarrassed follow-up conversations with parents who say, “It turns out his vision was 20/400 in one eye and 20/800 in the other. The poor boy is nearly blind!” Well no wonder the boy can’t read!

We owe it to our children to give them at least as much screening as a public school would offer. They deserve that much. If you haven’t had your childrens hearing or vision tested- make an appointment today! If you have a child with speech problems, make an appointment with a professional pediatric speech pathologist for an evaluation and testing. If you can’t afford a specialist order “small talk” and do the evaluation, testing and treatment yourself! http://www.homeschoolsmalltalk.com

If you suspect a behavior or learning disability, have your child tested. And please- do not tell me that you don’t want your child labeled! A diagnosis is not a label any more than discovering you have high cholesterol or low iron levels in the blood is a label. It’s the starting point to begin getting help for your child. Nobody is going to label the child unless it’s you!

So let’s talk about screening a bit for fun in the homeschool day, shall we? Do you have screens on your windows? Ask your children if they know why? Talk about what it would be like to live with all the bugs and mosquitoes and grasshoppers coming inside your house every day. Take a look at this website and learn more about the process of silk-screening where ink is pressed through a fine fabric screen onto paper or fabric to make a design. http://bit.ly/5hOBK

Enjoy a “private screening” tonight of one of your childrens favorite movies. Turn out the lights and pop the popcorn and enjoy your own private family screening before bedtime.

Read this interesting passage about the Lord’s command to screen animal sacrifices to make sure they weren’t blemished: Leviticus 22:18-23
